Apple dumplings are by far, one of the best fall desserts, however, they can be a little time-consuming to make. By using crescent rolls for the crust and brown soda or root beer to help make the sauce, you can save time and still have an amazing, apple-filled treat for dessert. Simply put, these sweet crescent roll apple dumplings are dangerously delicious.
As a child, I was always super-excited to see apple dumplings coming out of our country oven. They were one dessert that my mom made regularly, which was absolutely delicious and loved by everyone in our family. And, with an apple orchard located on the mountain right above our house, thankfully, there was never any shortage where apples were concerned. To me, more apples meant more apple dumplings.
Today, I still love apple dumplings just as much, however, I just don’t have the time to make them, or enough people around to eat them. That’s where these simple and easy-to-assemble crescent roll apple dumplings come into play. First of all, this recipe only makes eight small dumplings, which makes it perfect for a smaller household. And secondly, by using store-bought crescent rolls, I don’t have to spend time making my own dough from scratch.
So, if you’re a little lazy like I can be, and you don’t want to make a dessert that will feed a small army, give this recipe a try. I know for certain that you’re going to absolutely love it. I mean, how could you not? Apples, sugar, dough; what’s not to love? And, if you just happen to be one of those people, who actually does have a small army to feed, just double the recipe. No big deal.
Ingredients:
- 2 Apples
- 1 (8-Count) Can Refrigerated Crescent Roll Dough
- 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter, Melted
- 3/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1/4 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
- 3/4 Cup Brown Soda or Root Beer
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Peel and core the apples. Cut each apple into 8 equal slices.
- Open the crescent rolls and separate the triangles. Place 2 slices of apple on top of the wider end of each triangle of dough and then roll into a crescent. Place the rolled crescents into a 9×13 baking dish.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the butter, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until there are no longer any lumps. Pour the mixture over the crescent rolls.
- Pour the soda between the crescent rolls, making sure to not pour it over the crescent rolls.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
Suggestions:
- You will want to use a firm baking apple for this recipe, such as Envy, Granny Smith, Cortland, Braeburn, Honeycrisp, or Jonathan. I suggest using Envy, which are absolutely perfect for this recipe.
- I cut each apple into 8 slices instead of 4 because I think adding two thinner slices of apple to each crescent roll makes it easier to eat.
- I used root beer for this recipe, however, any type of brown soda will work just as well. If you do use root beer, you will not really notice the flavor. It just tastes sweet.
- The baking time will depend on the temperature of your oven. I actually prefer baking these a bit longer, which gives the crescent rolls a bit of extra time to crisp up. Just make sure not to burn the apple dumplings. Check on them every couple of minutes after 35 minutes.
- These apple dumplings are best served warm with the glaze drizzled over the top of them.
Improvements:
- Replace the brown soda or root beer in this recipe with lemon-lime soda or ginger ale.
- Serve these apple dumplings with this Buttery Apple Cider Tea-Infused Ice Cream or this Buttermilk Double Vanilla Ice Cream.
- Sprinkle a few finely chopped pecans or walnuts on top of each crescent roll before adding the apple slices and rolling them up.
