Trader Joe's Parisian Carrots

PARISIAN CARROTS

“They’re small, about the size of the average radish, and round, and at first glance, you may just think you’re looking at a teeny pumpkin.  Slice one open and you’ll see they have a heart-shaped center.  Parisian Carrots can be found in the freezer case, selling for $1.69 for a 16 oz. bag.”

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Saute in butter and brown sugar.
  • Add 1/4 cup whiskey, in addition to butter and brown sugar.
  • Add 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of chili powder, to add a little heat to butter and brown sugar glazed carrots.

Trader Joe's Spelt Risotto with Vegetables and Chickpeas

SPELT RISOTTO WITH VEGETABLES AND CHICKPEAS

“A rich, creamy, risotto-like dish, where spelt, the ancient grain also called farro, replaces the rice.  The result is both luscious and delicious.  This is a vegetarian dish that’s bursting with vegetables like pumpkin, zucchini, and turnip greens.  The addition of garbanzo beans boosts both the protein and fiber level, and smoked provolone cheese gives the dish a lush, rich, and unique flavor that will make you think it was slow-cooked with ham or bacon.  Spelt Risotto can be found in the freezer case, selling for $3.29 for a 16-oz. bag.”

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Add diced ham or bacon.
  • Add freshly grated parmesan.
  • Use as a filling for acorn, butternut, or carnival squash.

Trader Joe's Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli

HONEY ROASTED PUMPKIN RAVIOLI

“This tradition-smashing pumpkin treat is making a return appearance for Pumpkin Season, 2013.  The filling is a symphony of pumpkin goodness – sweet pumpkin is slathered with honey and a bit of brown sugar and molasses, then roasted, pureed, and blended with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses.  This sweet-savory mixture is stuffed into colorful, square pasta; one side is orange-red like a pumpkin shell, the other side a more muted orange, like the inside of a pumpkin.  At $3.49, Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli is a terrific value for fresh pasta.”

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Saute in butter.
  • Saute in butter, and then add 1/4 to 1/2 cup heavy cream.
  • Saute in butter, and then add 1/4 cup heavy cream and a 1/4 cup apple cider.
  • Add freshly grated nutmeg.
  • Add freshly grated parmesan.
