All the little Whos in Whoville will simply adore these Whoville Christmas Wreath Sugar Cookies. To decorate these vivid green and pink buttercream icing frosted Christmas sugar cookies, simply break out your brightest and most whimsical sprinkles. When it comes to decorating these Christmas wreaths, there’s no need to be a Grinch, don’t hold back. In this case, more sprinkles is definitely a good thing.
This is a cookie recipe you can bring out when you’re looking to make all of your little “Whos” merry and bright. It’s also a great way to get rid of any leftover sprinkles you may have kicking around in your pantry. When it comes to these Christmas sugar cookies, bright, vivid, and clashing colors totally work. Hell, throw in some snowflakes and metallic balls for even more variety. No one’s judging here. I mean, really, you’re already eating a cookie covered in buttercream icing, what’s a little more sugar?
Now, let’s talk about the actual cookie below all of this sweet buttercream icing. It’s a sugar cookie. But not just any sugar cookie. With its buttery taste, vanilla flavoring, and perfect texture, this is definitely “The Sugar Cookie.” The secret to this cookie’s success is definitely rolling it out between two sheets of wax paper. By using this method, you avoid adding any extra flour to the dough, which helps to keep the cookie’s lovely butter and vanilla flavor. After all, there is nothing worse than a sugar cookie that tastes like flour, right?
So, this holiday season, don’t be a “Grinch.” Grab all of the sprinkles you can get your little icing-covered hands-on, throw on some Christmas music, and get ready to decorate. Hopefully, you’ll end up with a few beautiful Christmas cookies, or at least a couple that might somewhat pass for what one could possibly make out to be a Christmas wreath. It’s all about having fun, playing with icing, and having a merry and bright “Whotastic” time.
Ingredients:
Sugar Cookies:
- 1 Cup Unsalted Butter, Room Temperature
- 1 1/4 Cups Granulated Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 2 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
- 3 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 1/2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
Buttercream Frosting & Decorations:
- 1 Cup Unsalted Butter, Room Temperature
- 4 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
- 4 Tablespoons Whole Milk
- 6 Cups Powdered Sugar
- Food Coloring
- Miscellaneous, Colorful, & Whimsical Holiday Sprinkles
- White Sanding Sugar
Directions:
Sugar Cookies:
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together for 3 minutes on medium speed.
- Add the egg; mix for 1 minute. Add the vanilla; mix for 1 minute.
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. On low speed, slowly add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture; mix until just combined.
- Roll the dough between 2 sheets of wax paper, place on a baking sheet, and then refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Use a wreath-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and then transfer them to a Silpat or parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
- Roll any leftover dough scraps between wax paper, place on a baking sheet, and then place in the freezer while the previous cookies are baking.
- Bake for 7 to 8 minutes. Allow the cookies to rest for 5 minutes on the baking sheet before removing them to a baking rack to finish cooling completely.
- Repeat steps 4 through 8 until all of the dough has been used.
Buttercream Icing & Decorations:
- Cream the butter in a large mixing bowl for 2 minutes on medium speed.
- Add the vanilla and milk; mix for 2 minutes on medium speed.
- Slowly add the powdered sugar on low speed.
- When all of the powdered sugar is added, mix for 2 minutes on medium speed.
- Divide the icing among three bowls.
- Use food coloring to make pink, light green, and dark green icing.
- Place each color of icing into a piping bag. Use a round tip for the pink icing and leaf tips for both of the green icings.
- Pipe light and dark green leaves onto the wreath, cover with sprinkles, and then pipe a pink bow on top. Add sanding sugar liberally to the bow and then lightly sprinkle some over the entire wreath. Add large sprinkle decorations to the wreath.
Suggestions:
- The baking time for these cookies may vary depending on how thick you roll the dough out. I suggest making them at least a 1/4-inch thick.
- You should be able to get approximately 24 cookies out of this recipe.
- I prefer to use gel food coloring when making buttercream icing. It does not thin the icing out as much as liquid food coloring and you get a more vivid color.
- There will be enough icing to liberally decorate the sugar cookie wreaths. I suggest making this fairly large amount of icing, especially if decorating with children. Some of the icing will be lost or consumed in the decorating process.
- Store these cookies in an airtight container in a single layer. The buttercream icing will form a little crust on it but will not get hard enough for you to stack the cookies.
Improvements:
- Replace the buttercream icing with royal icing.
- Place one or two of these cookies on top of a plate of Christmas cookies as decoration.
