Whispering Tombstone Cove

Every year, I endeavor to come up with a new and whimsical theme for the graveyard at The Historic Herndon Halloween House. After all, I can’t have my Scottish Skeleton Clan Army getting bored. This year was supposed to be a picnic theme, but when B.O.B. Bob put his foot down on the subject of my father making me a picnic table, plans obviously had to change a bit. I still want that homemade picnic table something fierce, but I’ll bide my time until I can convince B.O.B. Bob that it’s something he just has to have and can’t live without. I mean really, so maybe he’ll have to move it every time he mows the lawn, is that truly such a big deal? Anyway, this year’s theme is now a beach theme. My kilted Scotsmen are headed to the Whispering Tombstone Cove to spend Halloween playing in the sun and water and hopefully put a smile on a few faces while doing so. If you’re in the area, come check out what all of the fuss is about. The tombstones have yet to hit the graveyard, but by the end of the week, they most assuredly will be. After that, we’re always fussing about and changing or adding things. Stop on by and take a gander.

Finding a ship’s wheel was by far the most exciting thing that happened to me while shopping the summer clearance racks for the graveyard.

That, and finding lots of super cheap unwanted merchandise to make our graveyard look super spiffy. If anyone is in need of a whimsical baby pool after Halloween, don’t hesitate to let me know.

My father also came to the rescue with many lost and found items he discovered while working his summer job at a campground where there is a huge waterpark.

It’s nice to know that those items will get a second life. One that will help put smiles on the faces of many children.

And of course, it doesn’t hurt that I now have a gigantic blow-up shark to take to the beach with us next year. I’m fairly certain it’s gonna be pretty awkward to get onto, but that’s half the fun, right?

This scarf is one graveyard item I’m excited to use at the end of the season. I’m just praying that the black walnuts and the squirrels don’t get to it first. We’ll have to wait and see.

Some skeletons can’t swim, which means they need to wear water wings. There are a few life preservers hanging about just in case things get really out of hand. These were also a find of my Dads and really help to make the perfect backdrop.

If you’re near Herndon, stop on by for a day at the beach this Halloween and visit the Whispering Tombstone Cove. Make sure you don’t forget to look closely; you won’t want to miss out any of the fun. After all, it’s only here for one season, and then we’ll be moving on to the next theme. Hopefully, one including a picnic table, if I have any say about it.
