St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect holiday to bake a warm crusty loaf of no-yeast bread. So, for those of you that suffer from a healthy fear of all things yeast, here are seven original recipes to accompany your traditional Irish fare that require absolutely no yeast. And, as a bonus to several recipes for delicious soda bread, you’ll also find a few mouth-watering recipes for crescent rolls, muffins, and scones to help you celebrate the special holiday.
When it comes to baking homemade bread, yeast is the one ingredient I find to be the most intimidating. You see, I live in a historic home; a farmhouse that was built in the year 1898. This basically means, that more often than not, you can feel the wind blowing straight through my kitchen on almost any given day. Admittedly, not an environment that lends to yeast rising without a miracle or two. So, on days when the wind is blowing, or days when the weather is chilly, I stick to no-yeast bread recipes. They’re easy to make and have a high rate of success for those who aren’t overly confident in their bread-baking skills. And, when served with a healthy dose of butter or jam spread on top, they’re better than any store-bought bread you’ll ever find available.
