Football wasn’t something I really had to endure as a child, except of course, on those rare family occasions when my Uncle Doug would force us to watch it while visiting my Gammy’s house for Thanksgiving or Christmas. From what I can recall, football wasn’t particularly all that thrilling for a child who was forced to sit upon what had to be the most uncomfortable and definitely the most hideous settee known to God. Think brown pleather-like seats with a goldenrod yellow backing made of some 70’s plastic-ish material that had a texture that could somehow tattoo your body with its crosshatched pattern and ridiculous seat buttons within 5 minutes of sitting upon it.
I shudder just thinking about that settee and the pure torture it inflicted on me as a child. Compared to it, football was almost tolerable. And, from a non-football fan like me, that’s really saying something. Of course, watching the game would have been so much better if snacks like this recipe had been involved. But, of course, back then, snacks were completely outlawed when sitting anywhere on or near the danged uncomfortable, and horrifyingly hideous settee. I mean, God forbid we get Cheez-It dust on the totally wipeable pleather-like and plastic-ish fabric of the 70’s eyesore.
Now, is there a lesson to be learned in all of this? Well, if you’re going to get stuck having to watch a football game, then perhaps you should at least pick a house with comfortable seating to do it in. And, if the person whose house you are at refers to their couch as a settee, turn around and run away as fast as you can, because I can one hundred percent guarantee that it’s going to be a dang uncomfortable experience and they’re not going to allow you to eat Cheez-It crackers anywhere near their precious and almost certainly over-priced hideous furniture.
Ingredients:
- 1 (7-oz.) Box White Cheddar Cheez-It Baked Snack Crackers
- 2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter, Melted
- 1 Tablespoon Light Brown Sugar, Packed
- 2 Teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 1/2 Teaspoons Dried Dill
- 1/4 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1/4 Teaspoon Onion Powder
- 1/4 Teaspoon Finely Ground Black Pepper
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
- Spread the crackers out onto a baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, Worcestershire, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper.
- Drizzle half of the butter mixture over the crackers and gently stir to coat. Repeat with the remaining butter mixture. Spread the crackers out into an even single layer.
- Bake for 45 minutes, stirring gently every 15 minutes.
- Allow the crackers to come to room temperature before storing in an airtight container.
Suggestions:
- I did not add any salt to the melted butter mixture because the crackers already contain a decent amount of salt. Feel free to add a little if you choose. I would suggest starting with 1/4 teaspoon.
- You can replace the white cheddar crackers with any flavor you choose. Just make sure to use a 7-oz. box of crackers, so that the seasoning-to-cracker ratio is somewhat the same.
- These crackers taste better the next day, so try to resist eating them as soon as they come out of the oven.
Improvements:
- If you want to spice things up, add crushed red pepper flakes to the melted butter mixture.
- Love garlic? Add another 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder to the butter mixture.
- Serve these crackers with this Potato & Onion Soup with Ham, Peas, & Dill or this Rotisserie Chicken Alphabet Soup.
