These sweet and spicy soda glazed Polish kielbasa appetizers are made using one pan, take less than 20 minutes to make, and are sure to be a huge hit at your next football party. Soda, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, and a few other seasonings give these little game day bites a real flavor kick that your guests will absolutely love. Now, if only the Super Bowl commercials are half as good, we’ll really have something to celebrate.
Hey there, it’s me, Colleen, otherwise known as the girl who is definitely not a football fan. By now, you know this. If it’s not hockey, I pretty much don’t give a witch’s hairy dark chin mole. When it comes to football, the Super Bowl, or anything involving grown-ass men tackling one another on a fake grass-covered field, just know that I’m only in it for the snacks, appetizers, and game day bites. By the way, Miss Brenna’s only in it for the chicken wings.
So, if you show up at my house on Super Bowl Sunday, you may find Sweet Gherkin Pimento Cheese Spread, Secret Ingredient Beef Nacho Potato Skins, Bacon-Wrapped Cranberry Jalapeño Crackers, Creamy Horseradish Grilled Shrimp Deviled Eggs, Aint’ Nobody Got Time for That Crockpot Chili, Salt & Pepper Horseradish Roast Beef Biscuits, or possibly even these Soda Glazed Kielbasa Game Day Bites, however, you won’t find a girl or cat excited to watch a football game.
Ingredients:
- 1 (13.5-oz.) Package Polish Kielbasa
- 1 Cup Soda (Coke or Pepsi)
- 3/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar, Packed
- 1 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard
- 1/2 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon Onion Powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
Directions:
- Cut the kielbasa into 1/4-inch medallions and then place them in a single layer in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until browned. Flip the medallions over and then continue to cook them for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, or until browned.
- Add all of the remaining ingredients to the skillet, stir to combine, and continue to cook stirring often until the sauce thickens. This should take approximately 10 minutes.
- Plate immediately and serve with toothpicks.
Suggestions:
- These game day bites have a spicy kick from the cayenne pepper, which I really love. You can omit or reduce the cayenne pepper if you don’t enjoy spicy foods.
- After the sauce has cooked for 5 minutes, make sure to stir it constantly to prevent it from burning. The sauce may take more or less time to cook, depending on how hot your stove is and the thickness of the skillet you use. Cook the sauce down enough to where it thickly coats each kielbasa medallion.
- Be careful not to get any of the sauce on yourself when you are stirring it. The sauce will be extremely hot.
- For easier cleanup, fill the skillet with hot soapy water as soon as you take the kielbasa out of it. Allow it to soak for several minutes before cleaning.
- I suggest allowing these game day bites to cool for at least 5 minutes before serving them to prevent painfully burnt tongues.
Improvements:
- Add 1 tablespoon of dry mustard seeds to the sauce.
- For a tasty sandwich, place a few of these game day bites on a slider bun.
- Replace the soda in this recipe with beer.
