Making your own Italian herb seasoning mix is a real game changer, especially when there is no salt added. Not only does it give you the ability to control the salt content in your recipes, but it also allows you to customize the blend of herbs and spices to your liking. If you’re crazy about garlic, add more garlic powder. If you prefer food a little bit spicier, add additional crushed red pepper flakes. The best part about this homemade seasoning is that it only takes a few minutes to make and can be stored for use in all of your favorite Italian recipes.
Upon research, I was a bit shocked to discover that not many of my recipes call for the use of Italian herb seasoning, especially because I am so often ordering more of it from Penzeys. I blame B.O.B. Bob for this. When it comes to Italian seasoning, that man will pretty much sprinkle it on just about anything. His love for it is one of the main reasons I always keep a no-salt version on hand. When it comes to seasoning or spice mixes, nine times out of ten, I prefer to use one that doesn’t contain salt. However, most local markets only stock mixes that contain a high sodium content. That’s probably why, when it comes to Italian seasoning, I very rarely tend to use it in my recipes. Instead, I usually just add dried oregano, dried basil, crushed red pepper flakes, and any other herbs or spices I feel will work well in a recipe. However, with this homemade Italian herb seasoning mixture, I no longer have to worry about adding too much salt by using a pre-made mix. I know exactly what’s in it and can add lots of flavor, without adding tons of salt.
