Whether you’re grilling juicy chicken, succulent pork, fresh seafood, or summer vegetables, this versatile easy-to-make homemade seasoning is an essential money-saving addition to your pantry.
Around here, B.O.B. Bob is in charge of grilling. However, I am the one in charge of seasoning what we actually put on the grill. If left to his own devices, B.O.B. would one-hundred percent most assuredly add way too much salt. Shake, shake, shake; it’s just how he rolls. And while a little bit of salt is never a bad thing, I, for sure, prefer tasting other flavors as well. So, this homemade grill seasoning is a nice compromise for us. It has enough salt to add flavor, without it being extremely overpowering. When it comes to grilling, this sweet chili grill seasoning and rub is a real relationship-saver for us.
Ingredients:
- 3/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar, Packed
- 3 Tablespoons Chili Powder
- 1 Tablespoon Kosher Salt
- 1 Tablespoon Sweet Paprika
- 1 1/2 Teaspoon Onion Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Finely Ground Black Pepper
- 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
Directions:
- Measure all of the ingredients into a small metal or glass bowl. Stir well to combine.
- Use an airtight container to store the homemade seasoning or rub.
Suggestions:
- Rub olive oil, mustard, or mayonnaise on the meat, seafood, or vegetables before adding this seasoning. It will help the seasoning adhere to what you are grilling and prevent the meat, seafood, or vegetables from sticking to the grill.
- If you prefer more control over how much salt you add to a recipe, omit the salt. You can always season each recipe individually.
- I use sweet paprika in this recipe, however, you can use whatever variety of paprika you prefer.
- Try toasted or roasted onion powder and garlic powder in this recipe. It has so much more flavor than the untoasted or unroasted variety.
- This recipe makes approximately 1 cup of seasoning. Because of the brown sugar, the seasoning may clump as it sits. Simply stir the seasoning or rub to remove any large clumps before use.
Improvements:
- Add 1 teaspoon of ground cumin to the seasoning mix for a slightly smoky flavor.
- To give this seasoning mix a slightly herby flavor, add 1 teaspoon of dried oregano.
- If you’re a fan of garlic and onion, add 1/2 teaspoon additional garlic or onion powder.
