In my head, usually sometime around 3:22 in the morning, I’ve lately been finding myself pondering recipes to make using jerk seasoning. One slight problem though. When it comes to jerk seasoning, my spice cabinet and spice rack are both noticeably lacking. I’m fairly certain that at one point around 2016, I had some on hand, however, I’m sure it most likely got tossed out at the beginning of COVID when I found myself extremely sensitive to and aware of expiration dates. Now sure, it would be simple to just remember to grab a container of it the next time I visit the market, but most likely I would have the same issue with the store-bought version which I have with most seasonings. They’re just way too salty. So, here I am, in my kitchen, digging through all of my spices and seasonings, and creating my very own homemade version. Sadly, before I can decide what I’ll be making first with this new flavorful seasoning mix, I need to address another pressing matter. After all of that spice rack and cabinet ransacking, I think I need to spend some serious introspective time pondering over why anyone in their right mind, obviously not me, thought it was a great idea to purchase three spice jars of dried dill weed and five of ground cumin.

Suggestions:

  • You can use this seasoning mix for so many things. It’s best with chicken, fish, and shrimp, however, there are so many other possibilities. Sprinkle a little on olive oil-coated roasted potatoes or vegetables. Add it to mayonnaise for a flavorful sandwich spread or use it to make a spicy deviled egg filling. You can even add a little bit of it to pulled or shredded rotisserie chicken to make homemade jerk chicken salad.
  • For added flavor, use toasted granulated onion or roasted granulated garlic which you can find available online.
  • Make sure to shake this seasoning mix before each use. Some of the finely ground spices will settle to the bottom of the jar and will need to be redistributed.
