When I was a little pale blonde child, spending the majority of my summers in hot-and-humid-as-Hell Western Maryland with zero air conditioning, having ice cream often meant a thirty-minute drive into town to grab a dipped cone or a bike ride to the general store if we just so happened to be camping. Every once in a while though, on rare occasions, there would be a carton of store-bought ice cream tucked away in our freezer for an after-dinner treat. And more often than not, that ice cream was Whitehouse flavored, a vanilla ice cream base with chopped cherries mixed throughout. It’s what my dad preferred, and since he was the purchaser of said ice cream, it’s what we were repeatedly stuck with. Perhaps that’s why homemade cherry ice cream is still one of my favorite flavors to make. It brings back memories of a simpler time, makes me eternally grateful to, fortunately, live in a house with a somewhat decent air conditioning system, and also serves as a reminder that when it comes to ice cream, I don’t always have to stick with a dipped cone or a scoop of mint chocolate chip.
